This month, your Healthwatch have been across Cumbria, speaking with communities. From Alston, Barrow, Workington to Wigton the team has been listening to your experiences from across health and social care.
In this May edition, you’ll read about Healthwatch Cumbria’s role in Dementia Action Week, their visit to HMP Haverigg Prison and the ongoing NHS dentistry crisis in Cumbria. As well, a special guest, Maria, a Dementia Support Worker in Cumbria, shared how Alzheimer’s Society is working across Cumbria to support family and friends of people with dementia.
Dementia Action Week 2022
As part of Alzheimer’s Society’s Dementia Action Week 2022, Healthwatch Cumbria’s engagement officers were out at events across the county.
The message of the week was that people with dementia need a timely diagnosis and that they receive appropriate advice and support. Healthwatch Cumbria knows from previous engagements and projects that, while some people receive support that ‘goes above and beyond’, this isn’t always the case.
Healthwatch Cumbria talked to people across Cumbria to build a picture of what services are like all over the county, highlighting the areas of concern, and where praise is due. By doing this they can help improve services in the future.
90% of calls and emails to the Healthwatch Cumbria info hub are from people desperate to find an NHS dentist.
Our team has heard, that across the county, dentists are retiring, closing or becoming private practices, leaving families with hard choices to make. Click here to find out what we’ve heard about the dentistry crisis in Cumbria.
HMP Haverigg Wellbeing Day
Last month, Healthwatch Cumbria was invited to attend a local health and well-being event being held at Her Majesty’s Prison Haverigg.
The Health and Wellbeing Day, held in the gym shone a spotlight on all the different physical and mental well-being activities on offer within the service for the residents to try and promote a healthy lifestyle.
A message from…
Maria – Dementia Support Worker at Alzheimer’s Society
“Hi, my name is Maria, one of five Dementia Support Workers covering Cumbria who works for the Alzheimer’s Society. We provide information, advice and emotional support to individuals with any form of dementia not just Alzheimer’s Disease. We can also support friends and family who are supporting someone with dementia.
There are currently three face to face Singing for the Brain groups in Cumbria and a monthly Zoom Singing for the Brain. The sessions bring people affected by dementia together to sing a variety of songs they know and love, in a fun and friendly environment.
