People First is currently working with the Cumbria SEND Improvement Board (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) to support an intensive programme of engagement in a bid to improve SEND Services across the county.
The Cumbria SEND Improvement Programme has been created by Cumbria County Council, NHS North Cumbria Clinical Commissioning Group and NHS Morecambe Bay Clinical Commissioning Group, working with Cumbria Parent Carer Forum, to respond to recommendations from Ofsted/Care Quality Commission following their 2019 inspection of SEND services in Cumbria.
Ofsted and the Care Quality commission have said that SEND services in Cumbria need to improve and People First have been asked to support the above organisations to facilitate co-production and engagement activities.
So far we have pulled together a reference group for parents and carers which has met several times and we have delivered co-production training.
In addition, on the 13th of December we hosted a stakeholder conference which was attended by over 50 professionals. During the conference we shared video interviews of parents who have kindly shared their experiences of the SEND process. Below are two of these videos:
Continuing our work, in January we will be hosting four parent and carer conferences across Cumbria. These conferences will enable us to hear from more parents about their experiences, to listen and to involve the community within the improvement process.
