This week 17th – 23rd is Learning Disability Week and the theme for this year’s campaign is inclusion.
People First are celebrating by highlighting the amazing contribution people with learning difficulties can make and have organised the ‘People First Takeover’, working with key decision makers and employers to give people with a learning difficulties the opportunity to:
- Shadow people who have the real decision making power
- Learn new skills and increase confidence
- Have real life experiences of different job roles
- Build aspirations and goals for the future
The takeover day will involve an individual shadowing a professional throughout their normal working day. The initiative will provide individuals a valuable insight and experience of a workplace, and add a fresh perspective for organisations and their work.
Mencap have reported that from a recent survey, 49% of people with a learning disability said they would like to spend more time outside of their house. Learning Disability Week 2019 is about empowering as many people as possible, to get involved in activities in their local communities.
The #PeopleFirstTakeover highlights the importance of promoting equality and diversity within the world of work, demonstrating the value of co-production, and helping an individual learn new skills and build aspirations for the future.

It is our job to raise awareness and encourage equality of opportunity within the community, it is essential that we work with organisations across Cumbria not just this week, but throughout the year.
This is hopefully the first of many ‘People First Takeover’ events, and will be something we continue to do every year. Thank you to the organisations that have supported us to make this happen.”
North Cumbria Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), Cumbria County Council, and the Police and Crime Commissioner are all set for their People First Takeover.
