What is an Independent Relevant Person's Representative?

There is legislation to protect people who may be retained or restricted in a way that deprives them of their liberty. It is called 'Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards'(DoLS).

An Independent Relevant Person's Representative is a vital role under the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) framework. The RPR ensures the rights of people who may lack the capacity to make decisions about their care and accommodation are upheld, and their best interests are safeguarded.

The key responsibilities of an Independent RPR include:

  • Advocacy - Supporting and representing the persons views, wishes and preferences.
  • Monitoring Care Arrangements - Ensuring any deprivation of liberty is lawful and necessary.
  • Challenge and make accountable - By raising concerns, challenging decisions, and where appropriate, initiating appeals to uphold a person's rights.
  • Effective Communication - Acting as a conduit between the individual, their family, care providers, and local authorities to promote understanding and inclusion.
