We are looking for a kind, patient and experienced Personal Assistant to support our 5-year-old non-verbal son, who has a diagnosis of autism. He is a fun, energetic little boy with a great sense of humour once he feels comfortable and safe with someone.

He loves numbers, letters, trains, swimming, soft play, trampolining, outdoor activities, iPad games and walking familiar routes. Swimming is a real favourite, and he is becoming more independent with arm bands. He also enjoys music and theme tunes from his favourite TV shows.

He can become overwhelmed in new situations and may display unpredictable or demanding behaviours, so we are looking for someone calm, understanding and willing to take the time to build a trusting relationship with him. He communicates through hand-leading, pointing and sounds, and benefits from clear routines and patient support. Experience with SEN and autism is essential, and knowledge of Makaton would be an advantage.

He requires support with basic personal care and needs prompting to use the toilet as he cannot ask verbally. While he may struggle with others in his personal space at times, he can be very loving and affectionate when happy.

The role:

  • Supporting mainly in the community/outside the home
  • Engaging him in activities he enjoys
  • Providing full supervision and emotional support
  • Assisting with personal care and toileting

Requirements:

  • Experience working with children with autism/SEN
  • Patient, caring, reliable and fun
  • Confident supporting children with challenging behaviour
  • Full UK Driving license with access to a car (essential)
  • Preferably female
  • Flexible availability, including possible weekends
  • Enhanced DBS on the Update Service, or be willing to complete an enhanced DBS (funded by the employer)

Hours are flexible and can be discussed with the right person. This is a rewarding role for someone who enjoys building meaningful connections and making a real difference in a child’s life.
