Be Cancer Aware

This is a peer-led education programme designed to improve cancer awareness among people with a learning disability, as well as their families and carers. The training provides clear, accessible information in a supportive setting, encouraging open discussion and understanding.

You will learn about:

  • Recognising potential symptoms of cancer
  • Knowing when and how to seek medical advice

  • Understanding the process of GP and hospital visits

  • Identifying cancer risk factors

  • The importance of screening and where to access support

The course takes 3 hours but can be split into two shorter sessions if needed.

Why is this course important?

From our work with LeDeR (Learning from death review) we know that for people with a learning disability, cancer is often diagnosed at a late stage, with concerns around lack of adjustments to support diagnosis and treatment.

There is a significantly lower uptake of people with a learning difficulty using screening programmes.

People that are diagnosed are less likely to be informed and involved in decisions about their care.

Staying safe in the sun campaign

In Summer 2023 working as part of the North East and Cumbria Learning Disability Network and the Northern Cancer Alliance we co-produced a number of social media assets and videos for a Staying safe in the sun campaign.

These messages were shared across different platforms and with partner organisations to promote staying sun in the sun and how to reduce your risk of developing skin cancer.

How do I get involved?

Get in touch with our team by emailing Samantha Drude at [email protected] and we can organise a session for your group - maximum 20 people including support staff.
