Paul's Story

Embarking on a journey of generosity and community spirit, our cherished volunteer, Paul, shares his heartfelt experience at the People First Cafe. In his own words, he unveils the motivations and meaningful connections that led him to join our vibrant team.

"People First has given me a chance to grow as a person and continue onto a new chapter in my life. I came into treatment on 01.07.2022 with The Well which is a community for people with drug and alcohol issues.

I engaged first on their program of behavioural change and as I was well on in the process wanted to do some volunteering and look to contribute back to society. My Nana had passed away from cancer and when my key worker suggested volunteering at the People First Café attached to the cancer ward I felt like it was a great idea. I came and met Trish who made me feel welcome from the start and arranged my start date.

I would like to say a big thank you to all the staff, volunteers and learners who helped me during my time at People First. I was able to gain confidence in myself by working with others and serving customers. This experience really helped me see I have something to offer potential employers and gave me the confidence to apply for a job with The Well.

I am now employed as a key worker at The Well and I am working in a job I love and knowing that I am part of a team that makes a difference in the lives of people affected by addiction. My time at People First was extra special as during my time volunteering my mam was to receive treatment for breast cancer at Carlisle hospital. I was able to see my mam get her treatment and recover from cancer. My mam told me how proud she was seeing me in the café during her treatment.

For me, the best thing about volunteering was being part of a team. Sometimes I was able to help people and offer my experience and at other times people would help me and show me how to do things in the café. Best of all was going to awards evening and hearing that some of the learners had moved on to employment.

Thanks again for this great opportunity."

Paul's story is a testament to the impact one individual can make within a community and the impact a community can make on an individual. We extend our gratitude to him and all our volunteers who contribute to the warmth and inclusivity of the People First Cafe.
