Choosing a career you want to step into is a massive step. It's one, that the majority of people will face challenges in doing so. But for people with a learning disability and autistic people, it can be even harder. 

At People First, we firmly believe that everyone deserves the chance to build a career that feels meaningful, supported and full of opportunities. 

Creating Careers is about opening these doors. Therefore, whether you're starting out looking for a change, or exploring what's possible, we're here to help take you take that next step with confidence. 

What does Creating Careers mean?

Our friendly team of Job Coaches will work with you one-on-one to: 

  • Discover your strength, interests and goals
  • Build skills to help you thrive in the workplace
  • Gain hands-on experience in supportive, inclusive and safe working environments

Our approach to supportive employment is not a 'one size fits all' approach. We centre everything around you. It's your pace and steps towards your future. 

For families and carers

We get it; when someone we love is choosing a career path, it can feel like a big decision for everyone. Therefore we want you to know that Creating Careers is designed to give you confidence too. 

If someone you loves joins this programme, you can be assured that wellbeing is at the heart of the journey. When we first meet candidates we sit down and discuss what the support needs are to ensure we can best meet them. 

Creating Careers has now been running for 2 years, and across that time we have worked with a range of individuals, and built relationships with many Cumbrian businesses. Across those years, our candidates have: 

  • Gained confidence and independence
  • Developed practical, transferable skills
  • Moved into volunteering, training, and paid roles
  • Discovered they can achieve far more than even they thought they can.
