Building Community Care Together: Becky's reflections from the last few months at the Cumberland Collective

Over the past few months, I’ve had the privilege of stepping into the role of managing The Cumberland Collective, and what an inspiring start it has been. At its heart, the Collective is all about empowering local people to create small, person-centred care and wellbeing enterprises that make a real difference in their communities. It’s about care delivered by local people, shaped by lived experience, built on compassion, and grounded in the belief that small businesses can make big things happen.

From supporting people who want to start their own care micro-enterprises to helping established ones grow, the Collective exists to help people turn their skills, passions and ideas into services that help others live well, independently and with dignity. And already, I’ve seen the power of that in action.

What we’ve been up to so far

My first three months with People First have been a whirlwind - in the best possible way. It’s been busy, productive and honestly, a lot of fun. I’ve had the chance to dive straight into the heart of the programme, and here’s a little window into what that’s looked like:

Developing our Badge of Excellence Standards

This has been one of my biggest early tasks, and something I’m really excited about. Our Badge of Excellence sets out the quality expectations and values that make our Collective special. It helps ensure that the enterprises we support deliver safe, person-centred and impactful care.

Meeting the team

I’ve had the pleasure of meeting the entire People First team - warm, knowledgeable and genuinely committed to supporting our local communities. Their passion for the Collective's vision has made settling into the role so energising.

Welcoming new members

I’ve already met several new members who are bursting with ideas and enthusiasm for setting up their own enterprises. Hearing their motivations, their creativity and their commitment to care has been incredibly inspiring.

Supporting existing enterprises

Alongside new members, I’ve been supporting the current enterprises transitioning from Community Catalysts to People First. Ensuring they feel confident, supported and excited about the future of the programme has been a key priority.

Strengthening partnerships

I’ve been attending meetings with both internal and external partners, working to build stronger pathways and expand the support available to enterprises. The collaborative spirit across Cumberland is truly heartening.

Showcasing success

I’ve started developing case studies that highlight the fantastic people and services within the Collective - amazing stories of care, commitment and creativity. These will soon be shared more widely to showcase the impact being made across the region.

Looking ahead

We’re also busy preparing to launch our new directory in the New Year, alongside a more formal promotion of the programme. There’s a real sense of momentum building, and I can’t wait to see the difference this visibility will make for our enterprises.

How you can get involved

If you live in Cumberland and have a passion for supporting others, The Cumberland Collective could be the perfect place to start your journey.

We support people who:

  • Want to start their own care or wellbeing micro-enterprise
  • Already run a small enterprise and want help to grow
  • Believe in person-centred care and community connection
  • May not have business experience but have the heart, skills and commitment to make a difference

You don’t need degrees, business backgrounds or complicated plans. You just need kindness, drive and a belief that people deserve care that values their independence and individuality. We can help with the rest.

Whether it’s shaping an idea, building strong foundations, navigating early challenges or growing a thriving enterprise- we’ll be with you every step of the way.

I’m genuinely excited for what’s ahead. The last three months have already shown me how much potential there is across Cumberland- how many people care deeply about their communities, and how many are ready to step forward and build something meaningful.

If that sounds like you, I’d love to hear from you.
Let’s continue to grow this Collective together, and create a stronger, kinder, more connected Cumberland.
