We are pleased to share our End of pilot report, reflecting on the work undertaken throughout the pilot of the Maternal and Neonatal Independent Senior Advocacy service. The report outlines the service’s impact, the themes that have emerged from the families we supported, and our recommendations to ensure their voices continue to be protected and valued in future safeguarding practices.
We encourage you to take the time to review the report. It offers important insights, not only into what the service achieved, but also into the urgent actions needed to uphold the rights and wellbeing of women, birthing people, and their families.
We are deeply disappointed by the decision to close the Maternal and Neonatal Independent Senior Advocacy service, you can read a statement from our Director for North East North Cumbria, Kellie Woodley here.
Throughout the pilot, women, birthing people, and families repeatedly told us how vital the advocacy role was in ensuring:
- Their voices were genuinely heard
- Their concerns were taken seriously
- Their experiences were met with dignity and respect
For many, the service provided essential reassurance and support during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. Ending the service risks leaving a significant gap for those who rely on independent guidance and advocacy at critical times.
Although the formal service is coming to an end, our commitment to families remains unwavering. We will continue to:
- Champion safe, supported, and dignified care for every family
- Raise concerns when systems fall short
- Amplify lived experiences so they can inform meaningful change
- Advocate for stronger structures and support systems that families need and deserve
The conclusion of this pilot is not the end of our work, it is a reminder of how essential it is.
