People First comments on the Spring Statement

People First is alarmed by the cuts announced in yesterday’s Spring Statement and the serious risks they pose to disabled people.

While the Government claims to want to support people back into work and we welcome the ‘right to try’, the reality is that many disabled people who cannot work, and those who currently work who need extra support are being pushed further into poverty and isolation.

Reductions in funding for public services and the continued squeeze on local authority budgets will hit disabled people the hardest, especially those relying on social care support, threatening the very people that this government should be standing up for.

We urge the Government to rethink these decisions, to prioritise the rights, voices, and needs of disabled people and ensure no one is left behind.
