Transitioning to Adult Services: Helen and Matt’s Story

Helen, the parent of a young man with the label of a learning difficulty and Autism, accessed People First for Care Act Advocacy support. Helen’s son, Matt, was transitioning from Children’s Services to Adult Services. Helen kindly shares her experience.

‘Matt is my precious son, he is transitioning to adult services. He is inspiring to everybody that meets him and is a true character! I feel privileged to be his mum, as well as an honour.
Matt is severely autistic, non-verbal with severe communication and complex learning disabilities. In 2014, Matt and I lost David (Matt’s dad, my husband). This devastated us both. Matt was incredibly well looked after by Underly Gardens in Kirby Lonsdale where he has been since his father passed as due to his medical disabilities I could no longer look after him in my own at home.
Matt was to transfer from Underly in September 2019 to Adult Social Care. Transition was taking a little longer than anticipated. I was highly recommended to find an advocate, which I did…. Immediately. Thank goodness I did!
I rang People First, the receptionist was extremely helpful and put me in touch with the outstanding Louise. Her dedication, devotion, empathy, understanding, care and compassion at all times was exemplary and such a comfort to me.
We’ve had a long, painful and sad journey throughout, finding the “perfect place” for Matt… but we got there!!
Louise’s beautiful warmth, friendship and most importantly, professionalism shone out at all times! Her efficiency was and still is exemplary. My family, Matt and myself are so deeply grateful to Louise for all that she has and continues to do so far for us all.
People First are an empowering organisation; they treated us with the upmost care and respect. They nurtured us and deeply cared for the families/carers. They truly are very, very special people. People First believed in us!
Thank you Louise, Vicky, David and all your staff for looking after us. We are so lucky and hugely grateful to you all.
