People First have continued their work experience partnership with The Halston, this time with the Events Team.

People First and The Halston, hospitality industry leader in Cumbria, have developed a new partnership providing essential work experience for adults with learning disabilities.

One of the many services People First provide is essential job training for people with learning disabilities, there is the opportunity to work at the Conference Centre on Milbourne Street to learn hospitality skills and the option to work towards an employment qualification.

Dominque Harrison one of the Directors of The Halston says, “One of the rewarding elements of my job is seeing the personal development of individual team members, seeing their assurance grow and they employ the skills they have learnt along the way. By working with People First we hope to help individuals with potential to overcome some of the challenges they may have entering employment. As business owners we can help change negative perceptions by setting good examples and investing in people because they are the frontline and the ambassadors for our industry.”

This week Marcus from the Hospitality Academy spent a day working with Connor from the Events Team at The Halston to help set up for a University of Cumbria Graduation Ball.  Marcus helped with every aspect of the set up, from steam pressing the tablecloths to polishing champagnes glasses for reception drinks.  He also was busy helping with a function event, refreshing drinks and serving the lunch for business conference guests.

Connor was such a supportive mentor though the day, letting Marcus show his areas of knowledge and then giving him the opportunity to try new skills as well, culminating in a mini cocktail masterclass in Penny Blue.  Marcus can now make a mean Espresso Martini!

The team are all excited to go back and see what we will be working on next!
