Stephen's story: From Homelessness to hope

Stephen,* a vulnerable adult with a history of care experience, learning disability, trauma, and substance misuse became homeless following the breakdown of their placement. This left them at significant risk in the community, with limited support and no consistent trusted professional relationships in place.

Initially, they were not engaged with services and were exposed to exploitation and harm. Through consistent, non-judgemental support with their People First advocate, a trusting relationship was gradually built up, allowing them to share their experiences and express a clear wish for stability, safety, and their own home.

At first, their homelessness was viewed as a personal choice, but advocacy helped ensure their vulnerability and unmet needs were fully recognised.

Support then focused on what mattered to them, reducing harm, building a good and healthy routine, and improving their wellbeing. They were supported to access recovery services, healthcare, and practical community support, as well as safe spaces that helped them manage in times of distress.

Persistent advocacy was required to progress their housing situation, but over time a suitable long-term home was identified and they're now better connected to key services, with improved engagement in health, social care, and community support provision. This stable environment has significantly reduced immediate risks and provided a strong foundation for longer-term recovery, increased resilience, and improved wellbeing.

Stephen has shown resilience throughout and is now moving towards a safer, more stable, and hopeful future.
