Supporting Carers in an Emergency: The Lions “Message in a Bottle”

We are always looking for simple, practical ways to support carers and the people they look after. That’s why we’re pleased to share an important safety initiative that could make a real difference in an emergency: the Lions “Message in a Bottle” scheme.

What is “Message in a Bottle”?

The Lions Clubs’ International Message in a Bottle is a free, life-saving initiative designed to help emergency services quickly access vital medical and contact information.

It’s a small plastic bottle containing a form with key details such as:

  • Medical conditions
  • Medications
  • Allergies
  • Emergency contacts
  • GP information

This bottle is kept in a standard place, your fridge, so paramedics and emergency responders know exactly where to find it when needed.

A sticker on the inside of your front door and/or fridge alerts emergency services that a bottle is present.

Why is it important for carers?

For carers, peace of mind is everything. In an emergency situation, you may not always be there to communicate essential information about the person you care for. The Message in a Bottle ensures that:

  • Critical details are available immediately
  • Emergency responders can make informed decisions quickly
  • A loved one’s needs and preferences are clearly communicated

It’s especially helpful for:

  • Older people
  • Those living with long-term health conditions
  • Individuals with communication difficulties
  • People living alone

A simple step that can save time, and lives

When every second counts, having access to accurate information can make all the difference. The Message in a Bottle scheme is widely recognised by emergency services across the UK, making it a trusted and effective tool.

Better still, it’s incredibly simple to use:

  1. Fill out the form with up-to-date information
  2. Place it in the bottle
  3. Store the bottle in your fridge
  4. Put the provided stickers in visible location, such as close to the front door at head height or the fridge

Supporting safer communities together

This small bottle delivers big reassurance. By making important information easily accessible, we can help ensure that carers and those they support are safer, more prepared, and better protected in an emergency.
