Free, friendly and kind support for unpaid adult carers in Cumberland.

If you support a friend or family member who due to illness, disability, a mental health problem or an addiction, relies on your support; you are a carer. If you don't get paid to provide this support, you are an unpaid carer.

Unpaid carers are essential in the lives of their loved ones and in the communities we all share. They give their time, energy and grit to make the lives of those their care about better. It can be a hard thing to do.

The Cumberland Carers team is made up of local, friendly people who help unpaid carers with advice, guidance and support as they care for others and themselves.

From getting together in person, over the phone support, carers assessments, social get togethers and connecting with wider support, our team are here to help.

Am I a carer?

Many people do not see themselves as a carer. Helping people in our lives, friends or family, is sometimes just what we do. However if you support someone who relies on you, someone who if you couldn't help them they couldn't manage independently, then it's likely that you are a carer.

A carer may support or care for someone in many different ways. Your caring role might include:

  • Helping someone with their personal care
  • Meal preparation
  • Dealing with bills and financial matters
  • Managing day to day appointments such as GP and hospital appointments
  • Collecting prescriptions
  • Administering or prompting medication
  • Cleaning, laundry or shopping tasks
  • Emotional support and reassurance
  • Making sure someone is safe

If you don't get paid to do this (excluding Carers Allowance), and the person you're supporting is over 18, then our team can help.
