What is the Tier 2 of Oliver’s Training all about?

The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training Tier 2 provides a greater level of learning, building on the foundations of Tier 1. Tier 2 shares more detailed learning for indidiccals who provide direct care and support for autistic people or people with a learning disability.

We understand that businesses have a social and corporate responsibility to understand people with a learning disability and autistic people, and we want to help you do this.

What happens in the Tier 2 of Oliver’s Training?

Tier 2 is a full-day, face-to-face training session designed for people who provide care or support to autistic people and people with a learning disability.

Before attending, you will be asked to complete a short online e-learning module, so that the day of training can focus on real-world understanding and practical skills.

During the day, you will:

  • Hear directly from people with lived experience, who co-deliver the training alongside our trainer
  • Build a deeper level of understanding of a learning disability and autism
  • Explore how to communicate in ways that work for other people
  • Learn how to make reasonable adjustments in your day-to-day role
  • Reflect on real-life situations and how you can improve the care and support you provide.

Tier 2 of Oliver's Training is interactive and discussion-led to help you build confidence, not just knowledge. It focuses on what really makes a difference in your day-to-day interactions.

Who is eligible to take part in Tier 2 of Oliver’s Training?

Anyone can sign up to Tier 2 of Oliver’s Training. However, it is specifically designed for people who provide care, support or services to autistic people and people with a learning disability, helping them build the skills and confidence needed in their role. Tier 2 of Oliver's Training is specifically designed for people who provide care, support or services to autistic people or people with a learning disability as part of their role.

This can include:

  • Health and social care professionals
  • Support workers and care staff
  • Staff in residential, community or clinical settings
  • Anyone who may need to work directly with people with a learning disability or autistic people

It also applies to roles where this contact may not happen every day, but could happen at any time. In many settings, this means most frontline staff and those involved in delivering care or making decisions about support will need Tier 2 training.

How will the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training Tier 2 help your team?

Tier 2 of Oliver’s Training gives your team the confidence, understanding and practical skills they need to better support autistic people and people with a learning disability.

After the training, your team will be able to communicate more clearly and confidently, understand individual needs and make meaningful adjustments, and feel more confident in day-to-day situations and decision making. It also encourages people to reflect on their own attitudes and improve how they work, leading to more person-centred, respectful and compassionate support.

Because the training is shaped by lived experience, it helps teams move beyond theory and really understand what makes a difference in practice. Overall, it supports teams to create safer, more inclusive environments and improve experiences for the people they support.

"I commend the trainers for combining lots of varied information and facts along with their own personal experiences. All pulled together wonderfully by the facilitating trainer. The level of information was vast and was broken up pertectly throughout the day. The interaction between all trainers was easy and fluid. and crowd participation / learning was also a good balance. All in all a great course."
"The day was very valuable & can be used in both work life/home life. I feel I have a greater understanding of autism and learning disabilities."
