Care Act Advocacy: How we can help

At People First, we have a team of advocates that are ready to help you if you feel that you need some advocacy support.

Advocacy helps you to understand your rights and have your say. Our Advocates will stand with you to help you be heard when it comes to the decisions that affect your health, family and wellbeing.

We work independently from all health and social care services, standing 'shoulder to shoulder' with people to help you 'speak up' when you need support.

Care Act Advocacy:

One form of Advocacy that we offer is Care Act Advocacy. Our advocates can help you understand and uphold your rights, set out in the Care Act of 2014. If you live in Cumberland, Westmorland and Furness, Redcar and Cleveland, Hartlepool or Middlesbrough, our advocates can assist you in making sure you are involved in all parts of the decision making when it comes to your care and support.

This could include:

  • Local authority assessments
  • Care reviews
  • Care and support planning
  • Safeguarding processes.

A Care Act Advocate can support you to:

  • Understand your rights to care and support
  • Explore your options and choices to how best meet your needs
  • Be fully involved in decisions about your care and support
  • Be fully involved in your care planning and reviews
  • Understand how to raise concerns and complaints about care and support decisions.

If you would like to find out more about how our Care Act Advocates can help you, please read our 'Good to Know' guide here.

Care Act Advocacy is free, confidential and independent from health and care services.

If you think you are eligible for a Care Act Advocate, please reach out to your social worker or local Adult Social Care office.

If you have tried to contact your social worker or local office and have had difficulty, please contact us directly and we can help you.
