The Great North Run is classed as the World’s biggest and best half marathon with 57,000 runners taking part every year, with almost £25 million being raised for good causes. This year, People First were lucky enough to be a part of the action and had 12 runners taking part, raising lots of funds and awareness in aid of us.
On Sunday 11th September, we hit the road towards the North East, to support our team of runners. The day itself started early, ensuring we got to Newcastle in plenty of time before the race started. Excitement and nerves were starting to build!
Although overcast initially, the sun soon broke out not long after the race began, making an already tough run, much tougher for our runners. The Great North Run is famous for its warm welcome and friendly atmosphere and the crowds did not disappoint. The cheers, live music, ice pops and sweets kept our runners going throughout especially when the going got tough.
We waited for our runners in South Shields where the race ended and to see so many overjoyed and relieved faces crossing that line was fantastic. Everybody was taking part for their own reasons – Whether it was to smash a PB or running in memory of a loved one – to be able to witness the joy first hand was really special.
Natalie Bingham, Fundraising Officer said;
“Being involved in this year’s Great North Run was a dream come true for People First. To be on the start line with a whole host of well recognised local and national charities was utterly amazing!
Our team of runners were fantastic and watching them smash their fitness and fundraising goals was a true pleasure. We are all incredibly proud of them and can’t thank them enough for their dedication and support. Here’s to next year!”
We will shortly be announcing the final fundraising total from this year’s Great North Run, so stay tuned to find out how much has been raised.
