This week, our Experts by Experience, Pam and Lou, attended a peer support session to share good practice and provide feedback to improve Cancer services for people with a Learning Disability in Cumbria and the North East.
Since 2018, People First’s experts by experience, have worked to co-create and deliver a Be Cancer Aware course: Time to all Talk About Cancer. Based on real experience, this course is delivered by our experts to audiences with learning difficulties with the aim of empowering through knowledge on cancer risks, prevention, early diagnosis, screening and pathways.
With Cancer being one of the top 3 reasons of premature death for people with a learning disability, Pam and Lou’s presence at this session was extremely important and impactful. Working together with health professionals and Macmillan Cancer Support, the session provided a great opportunity to learn, listen and grow.
Based on their extensive experience, Pam and Lou shared valuable insights and perspective which will help to inform and improve cancer services. In addition, our Experts learned a great deal from this session too. Introduced to key developments in the health and social care sector, Pam and Lou took full advantage of this opportunity to keep up-to-date with best practice.
Finalists in The Learning Disability and Autism Leaders List 2019, our Experts by Experience continue to impress with their outstanding work. This session was one more example of the hard work and dedication of our Experts who commit their time to improve the lives of others.
