People First is an independent customer-led charitable organisation that has worked in Cumbria for over 35 years. We are passionate about our values of equality, respect, and inclusion. We provide a wide range of support and information services across Cumbria, Lancashire, and Teesside, all aimed at helping people to live informed, respected, healthy, and fulfilled lives. Our Head office is based in Carlisle, supported by offices in Barrow, Stockton and Lancashire.
The Department.
This position is within our Learning and Community Department. The Department
provides creative and meaningful employment, learning and community-based opportunities for people with a learning disability and autistic people. This includes:
- Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism: National training programme co-designed and co-delivered by people with a learning disability and autistic people to raise awareness and understanding
- People First Academy: Hospitality programme offering a vocational, work-based learning experience through our Conference Centre and Cafés. Also, a community-based Best Life programme, designed around the Keys to
Citizenship, building connections, health and wellbeing knowledge
and self-advocacy skills - Independent Travel Training: Promoting and supporting people to become more confident and independent in the use of public transport to access their community
- Creating Careers: Flagship supported employment programme which
pairs candidates with inclusive employers, providing placements, onboarding
support, and in-work coaching - Youth Provision: Range of activities and group sessions for shared learning, peer support, confidence building, and networking.
- Self-Advocacy: Opportunity to build skills and knowledge, share experiences, and support one another to speak up for their rights, choices, and beliefs.
- Care and Treatment Reviews: Independent panel members at these reviews to ensure autistic people and people with a learning disability receive the right support, avoid unnecessary mental health hospital admissions, and leave inpatient settings as safely and quickly as possible.

Duties and Responsibilities of the Post
The role is to play a key part in delivering the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training in Learning Disability and Autism to people who work in Health and Social Care. You will be required to gain accreditation for delivery of this mandatory training if not already held.
The Health and Care Act 2022 introduced a statutory requirement that CQC-registered providers ensure their staff receive Learning Disability and Autism training appropriate to their role.
Oliver’s Training is the Governments preferred Learning Disability and Autism training to support the provision of safe, compassionate and informed care to autistic people and people with a learning disability.
The successful post holder will be supported to deliver the training which covers the following topics:
- Learning Disability awareness and understanding Autism
- Reasonable adjustments
- Supporting people with a learning disability and autistic people with mental health conditions
- Communication
- Laws and standards to support people with a Learning Disability and Autistic people
The training is co-delivered by people with a Learning Disability and Autistic people.
The role is flexible and involves the need to travel independently to different venues in Cumbria and Northumberland primarily. This will involve training delivery:
- Online, 1-hour virtual training sessions
- Face-to-face, full day training with a group of approximately 30 learners
Full training and ongoing support will be provided to successful candidates to enable them to carry out this role and develop their skills.
We are committed to the training and development of all our staff, starting with a thorough induction.
The post holder will work as part of an Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training Team, alongside other Experts with Lived Experience Trainers and Co-facilitators.
Skills, Knowledge, and Experience
- Experience and confidence in delivering training/speaking to large groups is essential
- Experience of working with people with a Learning Disability and/or Autistic people
- Good knowledge (and willing to learn more) about the experiences of people with a Learning Disability and Autistic people.
- Knowledge/experience of Health and/or Social Care system
- Confidence using Microsoft products - PowerPoint, Teams, email and willing to learn other systems like Boost
- Tech-savvy and able to problem solve when equipment does not function as expected
- Good interpersonal/communication skills, able to explain things in different ways
- Ability to work as a team
- Planning and organisational skills
- Comfortable challenging discrimination and prejudice in a calm and professional manner. Confident having potentially difficult conversations (support given to develop this)
- Initiative, whilst also able to follow instructions when needed
- Positive ‘customer service’ skills while upholding values of equality.

Qualifications
Desirable:
- Accredited Oliver McGowan Training Facilitator. Applicants willing to complete the qualification are also welcome to apply.
- Other Education or Training qualification e.g. Level 3 Education and Training
Other Duties
The duties outlined above are not intended to be exhaustive and may change as the needs of the organisation alter in line with current agendas. Due to the developing nature of our organisation, we require staff to remain highly flexible in their approach, and work to meet the changing needs of the projects.
- Post is subject to satisfactory DBS Clearance.
- A full driving license and access to a vehicle with business use insurance is needed. Milage and expenses are reimbursed
