Residents in Coniston will continue to have access to local GP services following confirmation that a new branch surgery will open in the village from 1st July 2026.
The new Coniston GP service will be run by Cumbria Health Ltd as part of Central Lakes Medical Group, helping ensure continued access to primary care services for around 1,000 patients currently registered at Coniston Medical Practice.
From 30th June 2026, patients will transfer to Central Lakes Medical Group or their nearest practice. Patients registered with Central Lakes Medical Group will also be able to access services at other practice sites, including Hawkshead and Ambleside, alongside the new Coniston branch surgery.
The GP surgery in Coniston will continue operating from the current Wraysdale House premises while longer-term arrangements for alternative premises are explored.
Although final operating arrangements are still being confirmed, it is anticipated that the Coniston branch surgery will initially open three days a week.
Supporting access to healthcare in rural communities
Access to local GP services remains an important issue for many rural communities across Westmorland and Furness, particularly where travel, transport and appointment availability can create additional barriers to care.
At Healthwatch Westmorland and Furness, we know how important accessible and reliable healthcare services are for local people, and many residents are likely to welcome the continuation of GP services in Coniston.
We are also interested in hearing how local people feel about these changes and what matters most to them when accessing healthcare services in rural areas.
