Do you know how your data is shared with the NHS?
Are you aware of the benefits of sharing your data?
Healthwatch Cumberland recently met with Anna from Health Innovation North East North Cumbria at the Maryport Settlement, to find out more about the Secure Data Environment, a platform where patient data is securely stored.
Why does the NHS want my data?
The NHS can use patient data to help map health conditions across local areas and demographics. This means that researchers can access details like what medical conditions you have experienced and what region you live in.
How does this help the NHS?
Sharing your health data can help the NHS to improve local and national health outcomes by studying what patterns and trends exist within different groups of people. These studies can help with preventing illness and supporting people with health conditions to have a better quality of life.
Who can access my data?
Only approved researchers and relevant people are able to access this data, upon approval. This means that anyone trying to access this data has to have a clear and relevant reason for accessing the data and are only allowed to see the data that is necessary to their research.
How do I know if my data is being shared?
Most GP practices across the North East and Cumbria have opted in to sharing patient data through the Secure Data Environment. If you would like more information, or would like to opt out, you can contact your speak to your local GP surgery.
